1 Naming Chemical Compounds
Ionic Compounds

2 Ionic Compounds Monatomic cations Mono means 1
Cations are + metal ions Remember

3 Ionic Compounds Monatomic anions Mono means 1
Anions are – non-metal ions

4 Naming Ionic Compounds
I didn’t Catch your name. Name the cation (monatomic or polyatomic), add Roman Numeral if a transition metal Add the suffix –ide to the anion if monatomic. Name the Polyatomic. Bond, Ionic Bond

5 Ionic Compounds Polyatomic ions Poly- means many or more than one
These are two or more atoms bonded together with an overall charge Most polyatomic ions are negative

6 Naming Compounds -ite GOT –ate
-ate endings have one more oxygen (O) than –ite endings. NO2-1 nitrite NO3-1 nitrate SO3-1 sulfite SO4-1 sulfate

7 Hydrates (Water) Hydrates simply means that one or more water molecules are attached Name the ionic compound Use prefixes to tag the # of water molecules

8 Practice Naming Hydrates
CuSO4 * H2O Copper (II) Sulfate Monohydrate Na2CO3 * 6H2O Sodium Carbonate Hexahydrate Ca3(PO4)2 * 2H2O

9 Naming Acids All acids are characterized by beginning their molecular formula with the hydrogen (H) atom. HCl, H2SO4, HNO3, HI, HF, HC2H3O2 That is because a H+ is given off when it is dissolved (disassociates) in water.

10 Naming Acids We will use the prefix hydro- and suffic –ic if the anion ends in –ide HCl hydrogen chloride would be hydrochloric acid HF HI HBr

11 Naming Acids Acids that end with the suffix –ate.
Replace with the –ic suffix HNO3 hydrogen nitrate Nitric Acid Just remember, I –ate something –ic(y).

12 Naming Acids Acids that end with the suffix –ite.
Replace with the suffix –ous. HClO2 hydrogen chlorite Chlorous acid –ite is said by –ous.

13 Let’s Practice HCl H2SO4 HNO3 HNO2 HC2H3O2 H2CO3 HF
