Electromagnetic Spectrum
Waves Vocabulary 3.4

Light Absorption When a light wave is absorbed by an object, in which case its energy is converted to heat.

Light reflection/Absorption

Opaque Not able to be seen through; not transparent.

Translucent - allowing light, but not detailed images, to pass through; semitransparent.

Transparent Allowing light to pass through so that objects behind can be distinctly seen.

Light Transmission is allowed by transparency.
The moving of electromagnetic waves (whether visible light, radio waves, ultraviolet, etc.) through a material.

Primary Colors Any of a group of colors from which all other colors can be obtained by mixing.

Electromagnetic Spectrum
The entire range of wavelengths or frequencies of electromagnetic radiation extending from gamma rays to the longest radio waves and including visible light.

Visible Light Defined as the wavelengths that are visible to most human eyes. Includes - radio waves, infrared radiation, ultraviolet radiation, X-rays and microwaves.

Crash Course – Electromagnetic Spectrum

Speed of Light The distance light can travel in a unit of time through a given substance. Ex: Light travels through a vacuum at about 186,000 miles, or 300,000 kilometers, per second.
