What did people at that time all of them think of Abraham Lincoln?
Opinions about Lincoln as president varied widely. He was viewed as everything from warmonger, power-mad, and hateful all the way up to something near sainthood. He was extremely unpopular in the southern and border states; all of those states went to John Bell or Stephen Douglas in the election of 1860, and negative feelings toward Lincoln only increased after the election. He was quite popular in the Great Lakes region and won all of the northern states in the election. During the war, feelings toward Lincoln changed as events in the war developed. Until summer of 1863 (and the victories at Gettysburg and Vicksburg), most thought him ineffective, meddling, and foolish. By the fall of 1864, with a series of important advances in the war, his popularity again increased and he was re-elected. There were still many people throughout the north who despised Lincoln right up until his death.
