I will rise 1 Corinthians 15:23
2
Introduction Your name – why it’s special It’s who you are in a word Its meaning depends on who calls your name
3
The first time someone recognized Jesus after his resurrection was when he called her by name.
4
John 20 11 Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying
John Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb 12 and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus’ body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot. 13 They asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?”
5
John 20 “They have taken my Lord away,” she said, “and I don’t know where they have put him.” 14 At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus. 15 He asked her, “Woman, why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?”
6
John 20 Thinking he was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.” 16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic,“Rabboni!” (which means “Teacher”).
7
Mary Magdalene could not recognize Jesus because she was looking for a small and dead Jesus.
8
Jesus comes to Mary gently in her distress
Jesus comes to Mary gently in her distress. Jesus reveals himself to Mary without which she will not find him. Mary recognizes Jesus when Jesus calls her by name.
9
John 10:3 “He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out
John 10:3 “He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.” Jesus will call you by name, and you will hear him. This is closely related to the resurrection.
10
Easter Sunday Jesus rose from the dead. He is the firstfruits. But there is an order to this resurrection: Christ was raised as the first of the harvest; then all who belong to Christ will be raised when he comes back. (1 Cor 15:23, ESV)
11
Christ was raised as the first of the harvest
Sefirat HaOmer – festival of the firstfruits – the barley crop. To be followed by the main harvest of wheat in 50 days. The raising and waving of the barley in four directions
12
Blessed be the Lord our God, king over all the universe, who has blessed us with the first harvest in Jesus our Messiah.
13
“then all who belong to Christ will be raised when he comes back.”
14
“then all who belong to Christ will be raised when he comes back.”
Last Sunday (Palm Sunday): “the stones will cry out” – egregious (wrongful) silence
15
Mount of Olives – cemetery – stones on the graves Jewish tradition
Mount of Olives – cemetery – stones on the graves Jewish tradition. Mount of Olives is where the resurrection will begin Jesus: ascended on the Mount of Olives and will return there
16
Stones do not wilt or die. Your body may die, but you do not
Stones do not wilt or die. Your body may die, but you do not. Your body is waiting for the resurrection.
17
At the resurrection, Jesus will call you by name
Revelation 2 17 Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious, I will give some of the hidden manna. I will also give that person a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to the one who receives it.
18
I will give some of the hidden manna
Jesus the bread/food that gives life In contrast to some in the church of Pergamum who indulged in the table of the devil The Holy Communion is the table of the Lord Food and fellowship is worship
19
To the one who is victorious … I will also give that person a white stone with a new name written on it, The victor of an athletic game is given a white stone with his name on it. That white stone with his name serves as an admission to the special awards banquet.
20
Like the athlete, who keeps himself from bad food (table of demons) and to good food (table of the Lord), he is victorious in Christ. He will be given a white stone of admission to the banquet of the Lamb
21
White stone White = (leukos in Greek) also “clear.” Leucocytes = white blood cells Diamond is called a white stone. White stone or diamond
22
New name Known only to the recipient – special name New identity – free from the persecutor, the accuser, past scandal, blame, baggage.
23
New name Immigrants – many with a past they want to leave behind Example of the (French) Foreign Legion (Légion étrangère) Men without a past, only a future
24
New name New Life in Christ Find your second
25
The stone you have Black stone with your original name Jesus will give you a brilliant / white stone with a new name
26
At the resurrection You will receive your brilliant stone You will recognize your new name It is a protected name It leaves your past sin and guilt behind It brings you into the presence of God
27
What can I do? I will leave my black stone with my old name at the cross of Christ and wait for my brilliant stone with my new name assigned by my Father in heaven.
28
What will Jesus do for me?
Jesus will call your name and you will rise victorious over death.
