2 Definition Informatics:  is the science of computer information systems. Pharmacy informatics: the use and integration of data, information, knowledge, technology and automation in the medication-use process to improve health outcomes (efficacy) and increase safety and efficiency.

3 Aim of Drug Informatics course
To introduce students with the most up to dated technologies in the pharmacy world To expose students to research databases To provide students the principles and skills required to deal with the drug related questions To understand the suitability of Pharmacy Information System (PIS)

4 Pharmacy Information System
Pharmacy Information System (PIS): is a complex computer system that has been designed to meet the needs of a pharmacy( Public Pharmacy and Hospital Pharmacy). Through the use of such systems, pharmacists can supervise and have inputs on how medication is used in the pharmacy. This system provides pharmacy staff the necessary application environment to practice the profession of pharmacy. It includes the ordering, preparation, dispensing, and monitoring portions of the medication use process.

5 Some activities of PIS in pharmacy (1/2)
The reason for using PIS is to provide timely, safe and clinically oriented patient care. These systems started from printing simple labels in the past to complex pharmaceutical care applications PIS allow pharmacists to organize patient demographics and clinical screening for drug interactions.

6 Some activities of PIS in pharmacy (2/2)
It also used for Inventory Management in order to ensure that drugs do not go out of stock. Another use of PIS is Patient Drug Profiles, it contains details of their current and past medications and known allergies. Management issues

7 PIS and medication use Prescribing (only when it is integrated with Computerized provider order entry, CPOE) Transcription (interpreting by Pharmacist, approved abbreviations) Dispensing(distributing) Administration Monitoring (drug therapy)
