Metric Measurements SI or SYSTEM INTERNATIONAL
2
Why Use the Metric System?
A. It’s easier to convert from one unit to the next Based on powers of 10 B. Most of the world uses it
3
Mass How much matter is in an object
Similar to weight (downward force due to gravity) Measured in grams using a balance
4
Length How FAR or LONG Measured in meters using a ruler Or cm or mm
5
Volume How much SPACE an object takes up
A. Measured in LITERS for liquids using a graduated cylinder B. Measured in CUBIC CENTIMETERS (CC’S) FOR RECTANGLES V = L X W X H C. Use water displacement for irregular shaped objects Measure the change in water level when object is added 1 CUBIC CEMTIMETER = 1 MILLILITER = 1 GRAM OF WATER
8
Temperature HOW FAST particles vibrate Measured in degrees Celsius
Internal kinetic energy Measured in degrees Celsius
9
Density How close particles are packed together
How heavy for it’s size Density = Mass/Volume grams/milliliters Measured in grams/liter or grams/milliliter
11
Water Density Every gram of water takes up one milliliter of space at room temperature so water has a density of 1 gram/milliliter Objects with a density GREATER than that SINK! Objects with a density LESS than that FLOAT!
