The rise of Islam Before Islam, the Arab world was divided into many different tribes Many of these traveled to Mecca for trading Mecca had over 360 different idols being worshipped In 7th century A.D., Muhammad was called by the angel Gabriel, was made a prophet Muhammad was to spread the news that Allah was the only God

Major beliefs Allah is the only god
You go to heaven or hell based on your good or evil deeds Must follow the 5 Pillars of Islam: Faith – believe Allah is the only god Prayer – pray 5 times a day, facing Mecca Alms – (charity) give a portion of your money to the poor Fasting – During Ramadan, no eating or drinking while sun is out Pilgrammage- Must go to Mecca once (Hajj)

Muslim followers had to elect a new leader, called a “Caliph” First 4 Caliphs known as the “rightly guided Caliphs” used military force to control the Muslim world By 750 a.d., controlled 6,000 miles of land from Atlantic ocean to Indus river.
