2
What I need to know The role that nationalism had in the unification of Germany and Italy as well as its role in dividing Austria-Hungary. How industrialization created a need for natural resources that led to competition and cooperation among European imperial powers
3
Objectives Conflict between nations changed the political landscape of Europe and the world. Cooperation and alliances among nations caused a regional conflict to impact the entire world while the League of Nations attempted to create global peace.
4
Leading questions How did World War I and the Russian Revolution affect the countries that were involved?
5
Where did it all start??? Issues can be traced to the colonial period
Different groups racing to be the ones in charge and to claim the most land If we had to summarize the issue in two words: Pride Greed
6
The sticky situations How did some many people get involved?
Alliances: 1. Group one (green has alliance that are very old 2. Group two: much younger grouping and not as strong of a bond. What is the problem with these alliances? If one country gets picked on…. All of the buddies must now defend them…
7
The origins… Franco-Prussian war: France and Germany go to war over territory previously agreed on in a treaty… Essentially France loses (badly) and hold a grudge against Germany. Resentment between the two countries begins. During this time… Russia is making double handed deals with France and Germany and technically has an alliance with both…. Balkan wars: Wars after several other battles had been fought in territories around them. -essentially it was between Russia and Austria-Hungry. Strengthened Serbia and weakened the Ottoman Empire. Germany would not support her alliance which created tension between the groups. Russia also would not support her alliance with Serbia. Many other wars would follow with alliances that crumble
8
Boiling point… The actual cause of the World war are yet to be agreed upon, but the general consensus is that it began with the assassination of Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand and his wife (heirs to the Austrian- Hungry throne) by Serbian radicals Austria-Hungry went to their friend, Germans, to assist them in their war with Serbia. Serbia relied on their friend, Russia, to assist them…. Russia calls on her friends, France, … And the tangled web begins.
