The United States currently maintains a nuclear triad, or a system of delivery vehicles comprised of a sea, land, and air deterrent based on Submarine Launched Ballistic Missiles (SLBMs), intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), and heavy bombers.

10. Nuclear Arms
 - Each branch of the Armed Services wanted control of nuclear weapons.
 - Each branch developed its own unique system of delivery:
Air Force:  B-52 Bombers     (B1 Bombers / Stealth Bombers - air launch / delivery)
Navy:  Polaris System   (submarine / sea launch)
Army:  Hercules    (land-based launch sys.)
Nuclear Command Centers
- With the Pentagon being the primary target of enemies, other command centers were built
 - Raven Rock  (MD near Camp David) built in the 1950’s to deal with surprise nuclear attack.
 - NORAD - built into Cheyenne Mtn.... located in Colorado Springs, CO.
 - Looking Glass - a fleet of 707 planes that fly 24 / 7, to serve as a flying command post
* Minute Man system -  missile silos located in the upper Midwest (WY, SD, ND, MT, CO) 
    can launch nuclear weapons within minutes of notification.

were to be kept at school.
