2 Songs and Poetry Native American Literature contains a wealth of songs and poetry, which Helped align the tribes with (or appeal to) higher powers Served in celebrating, explaining, mourning, communicating, and remembering. Assisted in hunting, planting, harvesting, dancing, making war, observing life, and confronting death. Tell about the tribe’s culture and show reverence for nature. Use figurative language and repetition in conveying meaning

4 Figurative Language: Metaphor
A direct comparison of two unlike entities to aid in deeper understanding. They do not use like or as! Parts of a metaphor: Tenor– the true subject Vehicle– the subject reimagined Metaphor Examples: "All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players, they have their exits and their entrances.“ --Shakespeare “My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard.” --Kelis “My heart’s a stereo.” -- Gym Class Heroes “Baby, you’re a firework.” – Katy Perry “Despite all my rage, I am still just a rat in a cage.”– Smashing Pumpkins

6 Repetition The recurrence of words, phrases, or lines in a piece of literature. Functions of repetition in Native American songs: Creates a regular rhythm for dancing Reinforces important ideas Makes a song easier to remember Has a hypnotic effect on the consciousness

Who is addressed in this song? What relationship does the song suggest exists between humans and the divine? Do you think the Tewa were gentle or aggressive people? Why? What is the metaphorical “garment of brightness”? Which elements are considered the tenors? Which are the vehicles? How does repetition function within the song? How do the attitudes toward nature expressed in this song compare with the attitudes toward nature in American society today?
