Body Planes & Cavities Notes
2
Body Planes/Sections Imaginary flat surfaces that divide the body or organs Sagittal (medial) – divides body into right and left portions Frontal (coronal) – divides body into anterior and posterior sections
3
Transverse (cross-section) – divides body into superior and inferior portions
7
Body Cavities space that remains after organs inside it are removed
Two major: Dorsal Body Cavities – made up of cranial and spinal cavities Ventral Body Cavities – contains all structures of chest and abdomen
8
Dorsal divided into: Cranial Cavity – space inside skull; houses brain Spinal Cavity – houses spinal cord
9
Ventral divided into: Thoracic Cavity – upper chest area; houses lungs, heart, etc. Mediastinum – houses heart Adominopelvic Cavity – made up of abdominal and pelvic cavities Divided by the diaphragm
10
Abdominopelvic cavity divides into:
Abdominal Cavity – houses stomach, liver, intestines etc. Pelvic Cavity – houses reproductive organs, rectum, bladder
13
4 Quadrants Compartmentalizes organs into 4 sections
Right and left upper quadrants Right and left lower quadrants
15
Nine Regions Divides the abdominopelvic cavity into nine sections
Umbilical – centermost; visceral or abdominal pain Epigastric – superior to umbilical; heartburn
16
Nine Regions Hypogastric (Pubic) – inferior to umbilical
Right Iliac (Inguinal) – right of hypogastric Left Iliac (Inguinal) – left of hypogastric; gas pain
17
Nine Regions Right Lumbar – right of umbilical
Left Lumbar – left of umbilical Right hypochondriac – right of epigastric
18
Nine Regions Left hypochondriac – left of epigastric
