Using Visuals in a Meaningful Way
Inquiry Question How do we show depth of understanding and critical thinking about a text through visuals?

Steps to Creating a Meaningful Visual Representation of Your Understanding
Please Take Notes !!

1. Decide what you want to communicate about the story.
I want to show that Janine felt like an outsider among the ladies at work. She does not fit in.

Begin planning. Think About…
Colours: Cold (grays, blues, pale). Women are all one colour, Janine is another (green) Placement on Page: Janine is separate from the group, off to one side. Relative Size: Janine is smaller, the ladies are over-sized. How You Will Incorporate Text to Support Visuals: Loneliness envelopes Janine, words from passage are woven in and/or used as thoughts and spoken words.

6. Write out an explanation of your visual.
My visual is showing how Janine feels like an outsider among the women at work. The passage I chose is from before Janine starts lying. It helps us to understand why Janine started lying in the first place. In my picture Janine is smaller and off to the side to show how she is not part of the group. She is thinking about what she could talk about, loneliness envelopes her like clothing. The other women are much bigger. I have used identical colours on them to show how they are a group separate from Janine. They look gaudy and messy to show how Janine sees them. She does not respect them, although she craves their attention. The words I chose highlight how Janine sees the situation and how she feels like these ladies would not be interested in what she has to say. Through these images, I have shown how Janine sees the other women at her work and how she does not fit in.

2. Choose a relevant passage from the text
2. Choose a relevant passage from the text. Copy it out neatly and double-spaced. “Caked lipstick and coffee, the clouds of smoke in the little conference room where they gather… They will talk of boyfriends and husbands and children. Even if she is prepared they wouldn’t care about what she knows now, the information on bears or the facts she can recite on botany, or Berlin. She would have nothing to say.”

Annotate the passage with a focus on identifying how you came to your understanding and how you will show it visually. Example of Annotations
