Do you spend money on entertainment? What do you know about the history of Baseball, Basketball, amusement parks, going to movies? How long have they been popular?

Objectives Discover the new kinds of performances and recreation that Americans enjoyed at the turn of the century. Find out what people were reading for education and entertainment. Learn how American music was changing.

A) Performances and Recreation
vaudeville: type of inexpensive variety show (1870s) Comic sketches, humor, magic, jugglers ect Nickelodeons – converted places to show movies – nickel admission – most films silent Circus train would make its yearly stop Steeple chase, Ferris wheel and roller coaster in amusement parks Baseball leagues, football, and basketball – women road bikes – led to more practical clothing

B) What people Were Reading
As more people learned, more read for fun. Newspapers – entertainment Yellow Journalism: sensational news coverage – not always true Pulitzer and Hearst two of the worst Periodicals increased – Cosmopolitan Serious novels – Huck Finn – example of local color – describes everyday people very accurate

C) Musical Diversions Negro Spirituals – African American folk songs
Ragtime – melodies with shifting accents over a steady, marching-band beat Jazz – came out of New Orleans – would jazz up common songs – old hymns of slave songs – called the blues – Chicago Player piano and phonograph – could listen at home

Review What new kinds of performances and recreation did Americans enjoy at the turn of the century? What were people reading for information and entertainment? How was American music changing?
