Rate of Reaction Chapter 6.2 Pages
2
Rate of Reaction How quickly or slowly reactants turn into products.
High Rate of Reaction = a reaction that occurs quickly Low Rate of Reaction = a reaction the occurs slowly
3
Factors That Effect the Rate of Reaction
1. Temperature = effects how fast or slow particles within a substance will move: Heating - causes particles to move more quickly, resulting in more collisions and more energy. Cooling – lowering temp. slows down particles within reactants causing them to collide with each other less frequently.

Factors the Effect the Rate of Reaction
2. Concentration – refers to how much solute has been dissolved. The greater the concentration the higher the reaction rate. The lower the concentration the lower the reaction rate.

Factors that Effect the Rate of Reaction
3. Surface Area - how much of an area is exposed. The greater the surface area the greater the rate of reaction.

4. Catalyst – a substance that speeds up the rate of a chemical reaction, without being used up in the reaction. Speed up reactions while lowering the amount of energy needed for the reaction to take place (efficient). Examples: enzymes: amylase, found in saliva which begins breakdown of carbohydrates in the mouth.
