Part 1 – The Scientific Report
Abstract Leave till last but put first! Summarise everything. e.g. This investigation’s aim was to investigate the effect of hydrogen peroxide concentration on the time it took for biological catalase to breakdown the hydrogen peroxide. To carry out this investigation the volume of oxygen produced by decomposing hydrogen peroxide was collected in 2 minutes at different concentrations of hydrogen peroxide. It was hypothesised that as catalase is an enzyme it’s action would be faster if it’s substrate concentration (the hydrogen peroxide) was greater due to an increase in more successful collisions between the catalase and the hydrogen peroxide, and therefore more oxygen would be collected in two minutes. The results supported the hypothesis with an increase in the volume of oxygen collected as the substrate concentration increased. There was little variation between repeats showing a reliability in the results and whilst there were some limitations with method and equipment which may have affected the accuracy they do not have seem to have negatively impacted the results.

Part 1 – The Scientific Report
Introduction Give the relationship between hydrogen peroxide and catalase State what you are trying to investigate and justify your choice State your hypothesis You can reuse some of your work from Assignment A here

Method Equipment list – sizes and numbers of pieces of equipment Step by step Results Table of your results Graph Standard Deviation You can reuse some of your work from Assignment B You can reuse some of your work from Assignment C

Accuracy – Pass and Merit How did you ensure accuracy? Choices in your method Sizes of equipment You can reuse some of your work from Assignment C here

Part 1 – The Scientific Report
Discussion – pass and Merit Comments on your findings What do the results show? What is the relationship between the two variables? Include a copy of your graph/refer to earlier diagram of the graph with a brief description of what it shows. Compare your findings to any published secondary data, do they show similar patterns or not (you do not need to include the data, tables or graphs here just reference it e.g. ‘the results from a similar investigation by Izen, show the same trend…’ Then add the reference to your bibliography at the end.) Comments on reliability (can be used from assignment C) Comments on validity (can be used from assignment C)

Part 1 – The Scientific Report
Conclusion General statement of what your investigation found out Does it support your hypothesis? Restate your hypothesis and say why your results do/do not support it. Does your secondary researched data support your hypothesis as well? Propose an area for further study.

Part 1 – The Scientific Report
Conclusion – further study Same independent variable but using a different method to see if the results would draw similar conclusions. Paper disc method Collect oxygen gas Collect gas using a gas syringe rather than upturned measuring cylinder Same variables but with a different source of catalase to see if the results would draw similar conclusions Yeast/liver/beetroot/other sources Same method (volume of oxygen or paper disc method) but with a different choice of independent variable to further study how other factors affect the breakdown of hydrogen peroxide.

Part 1 – The Scientific Report
Conclusion – further study Setting out your ideas for further study: State the purpose of the further research State the independent variable (even if it is the same one) State the dependent variable (even if it is the same one) State some control variables with values.
