4 School Resource Officers
Our School Services Unit is a program funded jointly by the Bellevue Police Department and the Bellevue School District. Our Program is modeled on best practices from the National Association of School Resource Officers (

5 Why have Police Officers in schools?
Schools are more than just places where kids go to learn. Schools are also de facto community centers. They are places where both the needs and resources of the community come together. Schools are microcosms of the larger community that they serve. Public safety concerns that exist in a particular community also exist in their schools.

7 S.R.O: Law Enforcement Role in Schools
Provide a safe learning environment for youth in schools by maintaining high-visibility, uniformed Police presence. Respond to emergencies, crimes, or other calls for service at schools. Respond, investigate, and mitigate threats to the schools. Respond to calls for service in the neighborhoods around schools. Assist fellow Officers and Detectives with investigations involving youth. Cooperate with School District Security and School Administrators regarding emergency preparedness.

27 What does the day- to-day work of an S.R.O. look like?
Monitor the safe arrival of students to school in the morning. Patrol the hallways and problem areas of the campus during passing periods. Monitor the cafeteria during lunch. Respond to calls for service. Meet with school administrators, guidance counselors, and other faculty. Consult with parents as needed. Guest speakers in classrooms. Assist students with projects. Monitor the safe departure of students at the end of the school day. Attend after-school activities. Interact with youth as much as possible!

Former Interlake High School S.R.O. Officer Park working with Interlake students to collect toys for the Salvation Army and U.S. Marine Corps “Toys For Tots” at Christmastime.

Bellevue High School S.R.O. Officer Borsheim guest- teaching in a Health class about the effects of alcohol impairment. Here, he is demonstrating how Field Sobriety Tests can measure an impaired person’s ability to manage divided attention tasks.

Former Sammamish High School S.R.O. Trizuto hosting a narcotics detection canine team from the King County Sheriff’s Office to demonstrate the capabilities of the dog in detecting the presence of the odor of drugs in cars, lockers, backpacks, or money.

Interlake S.R.O. Officer Abare and Former Sammamish S.R.O. Officer Trizuto visiting a Special Needs class at Tillicum Middle School as a guest “auctioneer”. Students earn credits through good behavior, which they then get to “spend” on goodies at an auction.

36 Cases Student with gun at - Newport HS 2014
Another student reported someone had a gun in their backpack. Officer Mills investigated and found a loaded revolver in his backpack that he had stolen from one of his dad’s friends. Threats to kill - Bellevue HS 2016 A student threatened to “shoot up the school,” “Kill a teacher,” and “Slit Mrs. ?????? Throat.” Charged via summons. Threats and knife – Newport HS 2014 One student told another, “I could take you,” and indicated he had a weapon in his backpack. Officer Mills and the school pulled him out of class, the school searched his backpack and found the knife. He was booked into KCYC.
