A.) Major Depressive Disorder
At least 2 weeks of feeling sad, agitated, anxious, tired, and low-functioning. At least 4 of these symptoms: Problems eating, sleeping, thinking, concentrating, or decision making; Lack of energy Thoughts of suicide Feeling worthless or guilty

B.) Bipolar Disorder Alternate between feelings of mania and depression. Manic phase: elation, confusion, distracted, racing thoughts, compulsive behavior (i.e., shopping, promiscuity, random chores). Depressive phase: overwhelming sense of sadness, despair, lethargy, and failure. Artist Vincent Van Gogh may have suffered from Manic Depression.

Depression: Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): depression during he winter months. light therapy is used to treat this. Post partum depression

C.) Explaining Mood Disorders
Many factors involved: self-esteem, social support, coping skills. Aaron Beck & Martin Seligman: “Learned helplessness”: Depressed people have illogical views about themselves. They feel every minor failure is a huge catastrophe. Believe they have no control over their own lives. Women are twice as likely to be diagnosed with depression.
