2 NYS P-Tech? Some History . . .
The NYS P-Tech Program is a new model for Secondary (High School) Education How new? 2011 – IBM and NYC Schools and City University of NY (CUNY) through grant funding,16 schools opened in New York State, Adirondack P-TECH through Champlain Valley BOCES that is housed at Peru Central through grant funding,10 more schools opened in New York State, Northern P-TECH through St. Lawrence- Lewis BOCES that is currently housed at Potsdam Central through grant funding, 7 schools will open in September. Northern Borders P-TECH through FEH BOCES which will be housed at Malone Central (Total of 33 schools in NYS)

3 How will it work for our school districts?
Northern Borders Academy is a regional effort to redesign instruction Eighth grade students from the component school districts may submit an application for the Northern Borders P-Tech Academy Applications will be available in the school guidance office Students remain on the district roster while they attend P-TECH (up to six years) Franklin Academy High School space will be used to house the Academy, with thanks to Malone Central School District

5 P-TECH Northern Borders Academy will provide…
An opportunity and access to post-secondary education for first-generation and economically disadvantaged college students An alignment of high school, college (NCCC) and community systems in health sciences and human services Local employers with access to a talented and skilled workforce The support of programs of study in high wage, skill, and demand career areas

7 What does P-TECH mean for students?
Students enter Northern Borders Academy as 9th grade students Students attend Northern Borders Academy for a full school day Students earn a NYS regents diploma and a two year degree from North Country Community College Students commit to a six year program combining high school and college course work

8 And there’s more Students begin earning college credit in 10th grade Potential for up to 21 college credits earned before the commencement of year 5 Students are bussed from their home school to Northern Borders Academy in Malone During years 5 and 6, students will attend college on the campus or satellite campus

9 What does a traditional day look like?
Students take traditional high school courses with a non-traditional approach Classes involve project based learning Students will gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to an engaging and complex question, problem, or challenge Smaller class sizes allow opportunities for student/teacher collaboration (average class size, 15) Students gain work place learning experiences through business partner involvement Students gain college experience while in high school Students will begin doing some coursework on NCCC campus in grade 11 P-TECH and college advising on personal career pathways

The Program: Students remain in high school an extra two years to earn an associate’s degree The Skills: Employers help craft the curriculum so graduates are ready to enter the career of their choice The Commitment: Students are mentored by business partners and advised by college and high school advisors from 9th grade and beyond
