8. Maria
Maria has been in U.S. schools since the 5th grade when she was reunited with her parents after a four year separation. In 8th grade, she scored 2.6 on the WIDA Access. Her literacy score was only Maria’s parents only completed elementary school in their home country of Guatemala and do not speak English well. They are determined to provide a better education for their children.

14. Christian
Christian came from El Salvador when he was 16 years old.  He completed 2nd grade in El Salvador 6 years prior to coming to the United States.  While he was a good student in his early educational experiences, he had to stop going to school in order to work to help support his family.  He has very low literacy skills in Spanish.
