2 English learners are not one homogeneous student group!
What should be taken into consideration when scheduling ELs? English Language Proficiency Academic Background (math skills, literacy in first language, previous academic performance, interrupted education) Age of Arrival (LTELs, middle school age, 18+) English learners are not one homogeneous student group!

3 What tools do we have? Currently WIDA APT and WIDA ACCESS scores
Spanish Literacy Assessment Transcripts (international and domestic) In Development Math Placement Assessment Student survey to determine interests and strengths

4 Important Distinction
New to the Country/Beginner Newcomer Student has recently arrived to the United States. Student is entering a school in the United States for the first time. Student’s English proficiency score on the WIDA APT is between 1.0 – 4.9. Student has documentation of continuous schooling in his or her home country. Student is literate in his or her first language. Student may have recently arrived to the United States or they may have been here for some time. Student is entering a school in the United States for the first time. Student’s English proficiency score on the WIDA APT is between Student has at least one indicator of poor academic history (interrupted education, basic score on math assessment, illiteracy in first language, academic records with multiple failing grades).

5 What are their different needs?
Beginners Newcomers ESOL courses that teach English language skills while integrating content (EFL 1, LTL 1) Support in navigating a new educational system (Academic Foundations) Support in navigating a new culture (American Culture) Support in integrating with American peers (electives, extra- curricular activities) Courses that teach English and address academic gaps including foundational literacy skills (EFL Newcomer) and foundational math skills (ESOL Math) while teaching English Support in navigating a new educational system (Academic Foundations) Support in navigating a new culture (American Culture) Support in integrating with American peers (electives, extra-curricular activities) Socio-emotional support

6 Jairo Jairo is 17 years old. He came to this country alone, and has been working for he past six months. He is highly motivated who is determined to graduate from high school. He has no transcripts and hasn’t been in school for over a year but he did go to high school in his home country, EL Salvador. His WAPT score is 1.0.

8 Maria Maria has been in U.S. schools since the 5th grade when she was reunited with her parents after a four year separation. In 8th grade, she scored 2.6 on the WIDA Access. Her literacy score was only Maria’s parents only completed elementary school in their home country of Guatemala and do not speak English well. They are determined to provide a better education for their children.

10 Raef Raef began schools in the United States in 7th grade. His initial WAPT proficiency score was a 1.9, and his 8th grade Access score was a Raef took Algebra 1 in the 8th grade and received an A. Raef had continuous schooling in his country, Egypt, and has a record of strong academic achievement.

14 Christian Christian came from El Salvador when he was 16 years old.  He completed 2nd grade in El Salvador 6 years prior to coming to the United States.  While he was a good student in his early educational experiences, he had to stop going to school in order to work to help support his family.  He has very low literacy skills in Spanish.
