2 Program Planning Jan 12-Feb 4 – Portal open to enter course requests
Junior counselors meet with English classes to guide them in scheduling their senior courses Feb 5- Mar 2: Counselors meet with students individually Choosing course levels If you find your classes to be easy, consider choosing a higher level class Move up gradually (don’t go from Academic to AP--take Honors first) Scheduling: No scheduling changes unless you were misplaced in course or need level change

4 What should you be doing this year?
Keep your grades up so that your final grades are impressive! Take SAT/ACT Officially tour colleges now and over the summer Check the admissions office website to sign up for a tour or open house Complete your Counselor Recommendation Survey Start writing your resume

5 The College Visit Now is the time to be visiting campuses!
Visits can affect admission, especially to schools in our region Make the most of your visit: Take an official admissions tour, Eat the food, explore the town, speak with students College Fair: March 6:30PM, CB South Gym College Rep Visits to West: Start in September Sign up on Naviance

6 SAT/ACT Dates SAT ACT March 10 May 5 June 2 August 25
Register on Collegeboard.org ACT February 10 April 14 June 9 July 14 Register on ACTstudent.org Last chance for either test is next Fall! - SAT’s and ACTs can be super scored together - Scores take a month to come out and you want to have them before admission deadlines. - More than 3 times and schools will average instead of super score

7 SAT Subject Tests Only elite schools require or “recommend” Subject Tests! Subject Tests are one hour long and are meant to show student strengths in a specific subject You can take up to 3 in one sitting Take 2 subject tests (only Georgetown requires 3) Subject Tests can be taken in May, June, August, or October

8 SAT/ACT Optional? SAT/ACT Optional Colleges listed on: Use this option when your SAT or ACT scores are lower than you had hoped for, especially in comparison with your GPA Examples of SAT optional schools in PA: Dickinson, Drexel, F&M, Gettysburg, Moravian, Muhlenberg, Scranton, St. Joe’s, Ursinus Some majors must submit scores (usually for nursing and engineering)

9 Work on narrowing down your choices; You will end up applying to approximately 5 schools
Make sure that you have schools in each category (reach, realistic, safety) If you are unsure of how you compare, ask us and check Naviance comparisons

10 Naviance Use the Scattergrams to see how you stack up against other students from CB West! Scattergrams (with the exception of Penn State) are a true representation of who from CB West is getting accepted at each college or university!

11 The College Process: 4 Simple Steps
Send Scores Request to send official test scores through collegeboard or Act.org Transcripts Complete Release of Records form and online transcript request list in Naviance Recs Ask two teachers for recommendations Ask NOW—they may request information from you Complete the 2019 Counselor Recommendation Survey in Naviance for your counselor Apply Senior Year: Apply to colleges online between September and November

12 College Terms You Should Know
Early Decision: This is a binding agreement! You may choose only 1 schools to apply to ED. If you are admitted, you MUST attend. Early Action: Apply early and find out is you are accepted early. You can apply to a number of schools EA. Rolling Admission: These schools don’t have a strict deadline but they may have a priority date. You are given an admission decision weeks after applying. Regular Decision: There is one date when the application is due (usually January 15th) and one date when you receive notice (usually April 1st)

13 Common Application & Coalition Application
Start on each college’s admissions website to see whether they have their own application, use the Common Application, or use the Coalition Application (or all 3!) Fill out one application that is accepted at many colleges Students fill out their application once and then choose which schools it should be sent to. Each application is paid for separately There may be supplemental essays for each college *Common App essay completed in Junior English classes*

You type your resume in on Naviance & on Word Include GPA if it is above 3.0 Include information from 9th - 12th grade only Make the categories fit your experience This is a requirement for the Career Plan, so get a head start on it! - A resume is required for CP next year! - A college app or job app is also required!

15 Summer Plans Get a summer job! Volunteer
Consider a summer college class or camp Summer college programs are listed in Naviance under “enrichment programs”

16 Financial Aid NOW: Financial Aid “Net Price” calculators
On college financial aid websites Give you projected cost for a school NEXT YEAR: Financial Aid Night at CB South in October FAFSA Complete after October 1, 2018 CSS profile Complete fall of Senior year if school requests it (collegeboard.com) Scholarships Most are from the college Naviance list (apply spring of senior year)

17 Athletes If you are going to play Division I or II athletics in college, you must register with the NCAA Junior year To register: Cost: $80 Check their website for NCAA approved courses

18 Military Branches: Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines, Navy
Military Options: Enlist Reserves Army or Air National Guard ROTC Scholarships (begin application in July) Academies (begin research Junior year)
