Volunteered to be a Red Cross ambulance driver in World War I First published short stories were in 1925 in the collection In Our Time. Exerted much influence on contemporary life and writing Born in 1899 and died in 1961

Literary Time Period: “In Another Country”
During World War I Hemingway was influenced while serving as an ambulance driver He understood the random violence of war. He often focused on the themes of isolation and alienation. He explores the power of death and creates a sense of reality.

Author’s Style: Uses dialogue to reveal characters and situations directly. Language is almost always simple and direct. His style was influenced by his years as a newspaper reporter. Language is repetitive. Characters are normally ordinary people with normal concerns.

Author’s Purpose To convey the randomness and ironies of death

To reinforce his emotional deadness and disenchantment with the war To portray war NOT as an opportunity to prove one’s honor or patriotism, BUT as a source of physical or emotional injury
