The US used the policy of containment to prevent the spread of communism. Each supported an opposing side involved in a war. They provided aid and troops. The US and USSR wanted to further their own agenda. Korean War The US supported South Korea, while the USSR supported North Korea and instilled a communist government. Not only did the US and USSR compete with one another for the most powerful nuclear weapons, they also competed for the best space exploration and technology. Sputnik I was launched on Oct. 4, 1957. With the collapse of the USSR, the Cold War came to an end.
The Cold War came to an end on December, 24, 1991, when the USSR dissolved. Its economy and government were struggling, and its people were unhappy. 15 independent and separate countries emerged, with Russia being the largest. *Click on the video. Nuclear War By 1949, Soviets had the nuclear bomb.
Both the US and Soviets tried to create more powerful weapons. This was known as the arms race. People were afraid this would lead to a nuclear war. People prepared by storing food and building bomb shelters.

Anti-Communism 1950’s there was the fear of the spread of communism.
Anti-communism is the movement to stop the spread of communism and its ideas. Senator Joseph McCarthy claimed that secret communists worked in the US Government. McCarthy started committee hearing to determine if people where communists or not. Many people lost their jobs and livelihood based on rumors. Eventually, McCarthy’s tactics backfired and he was censored by the Senate.

Korean War UN was started in 1945.
In June 1950, communist North Korean troops invaded democratic South Korea. UN sent soldiers to defend South Korea with General Douglas MacArthur leading the UN forces. Fighting was fierce with China supporting North Korea. By 1953, the two sides agreed to a cease fire and the country remains divided to this day.

Cuban Missile Crisis In 1959, Fidel Castro led a revolution in Cuba. The country becomes communist. In 1962, the US discovered the Soviet Union was putting nuclear weapons on Cuba. President John F. Kennedy ordered a blockage of Cuba and demanded the removal of the missiles. The Soviets refused for several days. Eventually, the Soviets agreed and war was avoided.
