16. Summer holiday homework
1) Record and transcribe 3 further conversations in which you are not yourself a participant. These can be from media such as chat shows, post-match football pundits; political interviews (radio or television) or recordings of friends, family etc
2) Preparation for the Language Change topic next year. As part of your current scrap book / or by starting a new scrapbook you will collect the following:

17. How do I use language?
Studying the second year of A level requires you to think even more deeply about how language is used, especially by yourself.
This transition work will help you:
Produce work for the Language and Identity coursework investigation you will write next year
Review and improve spoken language and transcript analysis skills
Pre-plan answers for the Language Issues exam question (Power/Situation/Standard/Non-Standard English)

18. Tasks for transition Task 1
Using your own recording equipment, record and transcribe three examples of conversations in which you yourself are a participant.
You will be provided with suggestions for different contexts (at home/college/ at part-time job etc) and also some prompts for topics of conversation that you may find useful.
Each recording should be seconds long: this will result in about 1-2 sides of transcription in each case.
You can work with a partner to produce these transcripts, but you will submit them for assessment individually.
Transcripts must be drafted and redrafted to reflect the highest standards of professional academic transcription.
The transcripts must be typed up, then read carefully and analysed by you so that you understand them in detail. You must annotate them thoroughly by hand with a wide range of language terminology and concepts.
After this work is returned to you at the end of the term, it must be kept on file throughout the 2nd year where it can potentially be included as data for your Language Investigation Coursework.

19. Tasks for transition Task 2
You will also collect (print out) 4 pages of social media interactions in which you have participated. For example: twitter tweets; text messages. WhatsApp messaging etc

20. Tasks for transition Task 3
You will then write a 2000 word report with the title “What my language reveals about my identity”. You can structure it as follows:
Paragraphs 1-3: Introduction (Who am I? A personal language biography e.g. regional dialect features due to where you were born/ brought up - accent features - influence of education - influence of parents’ language - other languages you speak - influence of education – codeswitching – bidialecticalism etc…
Paragraphs 4-6 : Language and situation: how my language varies according to context (3 paragraphs responding to each of the three transcripts you have collected)
Paragraphs 7-8: analysis by language method: (2 paragraphs) Choose 2 language methods from the following: phonology (i.e. my own accent features); lexis (do I use standard- non-standard lexical choices or a mixture?); grammar (do I use standard /non-standard grammatical choices or a mixture); discourse and pragmatics (what are the conversational strategies and roles I employ that reflect ideas of Language and power/language and gender?)

21. Tasks for transition Task 4
You will then summarise your report as an A3 poster to be a) presented to the class for a minimum of 2 minutes) and b) displayed on your classroom wall.

22. The tasks You be marked individually for each task
You have to produce your 4 tasks individually
However, you may record/ transcribe transcripts with a partner/ maximum of three
All pieces must be completed to ensure progression

23. Task 1 and 2
Task 1
During the remainder of the class time this week, create three 30 second recordings of conversations which include you as a participant
There are some ideas of the topics you can choose on the handout
Transcribe the recordings
Annotate the transcriptions
Bring your 3 annotated pieces with you to the first lesson of next week
You do not need to come to class for the remainder of this week, but we will be on hand to answer any questions you have
Task 2
Print off 4 sides of resources from social media sites such as Twitter, text messages, WhatsApp etc where you are a participant
You need to anonymise other participants’ messages, and ask for permission from anyone else involved before printing messages they have sent to you
