1 Computer Assisted Exercise (CAX)
Norwegian NJHQ Computer Assisted Exercise (CAX) Brief on Simulation Sept 2017 Ltc Bjarne Korsgård Chief CAX NOR NJHQ

2 NOR CAX ORG NOR NJHQ started in 2009 to plan a national CAX capability with a minimum organisation of 7 PAX The first CAX supported exercise was in 2011 Only 1 pax worked full time with CAX until 2014 Rolands (and earlier NCI Agency) supports and educates NJHQ CAX educates and trains national CAX operators.

3 NOR CAX NOR CAX is a NATO SECRET level system build according to national secret regulations and has its own gateway to NATO. NOR CAX consist of these systems/applications: Joint Theater Level Simulation (JTLS) NORCCIS 7 NEC CCIS Outlook (MS Office) Joint Exercise Management Module (JEMM) Spark (Chat).

4 Objectives Exercise Objectives Training Objectives
Primary Training Objectives Secondary Training Objectives (Experimentation Objectives) discovery, validation, demonstration

5 Constructive Simulations
Simulation and CAX support personnel: Computes the possible outcomes and results of the commands given by the TA to the simulated units and entities Simulates the entities and conditions not controlled by the TA or EXCON according to the parameters set Maintains a consistent white truth Provides inputs for the C2 systems.

6 Recent security approvals
Distributed operations to other sites Mail from NORCAX to FISB/H (National secret) Move files from NORCAX to FISB/H. Planning on using only one JEMM, it will be on NS and can be used directly from NORCAX.

7 NOR CAX Operational level, coordinated with strategic and tactical level Operating with JTLS Used on the main national CPX and a few wargames Planning to use it in live exercises where simulated operations are coordinated, but segregated from live operations Currently only 3 pax but supported by many, will be 8 pax during

2 main systems in CAX: JEMM and JTLS JEMM Planning and structuring of the exercises JTLS Simulation and stimulation of live systems to display the situation very realisticly. CAX will also be supporting wargames, consept developement, C4IS stimulation, analyses and experimentation.

10 NOR CAX – Wargaming NOR CAX has been, and will be, used as a wargaming tool.

15 NATO Exercises The next two major NATO exercises in 2017 and 2018 will be CAX simulated from JWC (Stavanger, Norway). NORCAX will be located to JWC and simulate the Norwegian forces under Norwegian national command using NATO JTLS.

16 Challenges Database LOG BDA Realism
Errors needs to be corrected – big job Lacking info needs to be put in – another big job LOG National responsibility – not trained in NATO Auto setting gives minimal training Time and personnel consuming when manual setting BDA JTLS reports only damaged or destroyed when hit Needs to be more detailed Realism Parameter settings often incorrect.

17 Not tried during an exercise yet. Improvements:
JTLS-GO Not tried during an exercise yet. Improvements: Better map functionality Easier to learn and operate More realism Better BDA functionality Easier to prepare/set up vignets for table tops Automatic/easier import to database Automatic/easier parameter settings Drag and drop functionality.
