1 Biomedical Sciences Pathway

2 Pathway Overview 4-year program designed by Project Lead the Way
3 foundation courses, 1 year each 1 year capstone course during 4th year Case-based scenarios span all courses Explore a range of careers in biomedical sciences as they learn content in the context of the real world

3 Foundation Course 1 Principles of Biomedical Science (PBS)
Explore concepts of biology and medicine to determine factors that led to the death of a fictional person Examine autopsy reports, investigate medical history, and explore medical treatments that might have prolonged the person’s life Learn about human physiology, basic biology, medicine, and research processes while allowing you to design your own experiments to solve problems

4 Foundation Course 2 Human Body Systems (HBS)
Examine the interactions of human body systems as they explore identity, power, movement, protection, and homeostasis Build organs and tissues on MANIKEN® skeletal models Use data acquisition software to monitor body functions, such as muscle movement, reflex and voluntary action, and respiration Take on the roles of biomedical professionals to solve real-world medical cases

5 Foundation Course 3 Medical Interventions (MI)
Follow the life of a fictitious family as they investigate how to prevent, diagnose, and treat disease Explore how to detect and fight infection; screen and evaluate the code in human DNA; evaluate cancer treatment options; and prevail when the organs of the body begin to fail Learn about a range of interventions related to immunology, surgery, genetics, pharmacology, medical devices, and diagnostics through cases

6 Capstone Course Biomedical Innovation (BI)
Build on knowledge and skills gained from previous courses to design innovative solutions for today’s most pressing health challenges Address topics ranging from public health and biomedical engineering to clinical medicine and physiology Opportunity to work on an independent design project with a mentor or advisor from a university, medical facility, or research institution
