1 Temperate Grasslands By: Tyler Mensch, Dominic Bogucki, and Ariel Schofield

2 Where are temperate grasslands?
Temperate grasslands are found in North America, Eurasia, Southern South America, Southern and Central Africa, Australia and New Zealand.

3 Temperate Grassland Geological Features
Temperate grasslands are large, flat lands and homes to a large community of organisms The soil is very rich, therefore many types of grasses and shrubs grow During the winter, grasses will die resulting in a lot of hummus, creating a continuous underground sod Herds of large grazing animals, such as bison, populate grasslands at only certain times of the year Organisms in this biome include jack rabbits, deer, elk, prairie dogs, insects, reptiles and many species of birds

4 Precipitation and Climate
Average Annual Precipitation: 25 to 75 centimeters of rain Temperature Range: Up to 100 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer, and in some grasslands, down to -40 degrees in the winter

5 Types of Animals Gazelles Zebras Prairie dogs Mice Hawks Snakes
Blackbirds Foxes

6 Prairie Dogs Burrowing rodents

7 Gazelles Small charming antelope

8 Hawks long tails and high visual acuity,

9 Types of Plants Cotton Woods Oaks Willows Purple Needle grass
Blazing Stars Clovers Buffalo Grass Sunflowers

10 Cotton Woods a flowering shrub or tree

11 Willows Willows have bark that store water for a long time.

12 Purple Needle Grass Native Grass used for low water availability.

13 Adaptations of Animals
Small Rodents adapted with thicker teeth to get through the thick grass. Adapt to dry, windy conditions. Some animals have flat topped teeth, which is for eating grass. Many Prairie animals have front legs and paws that allow them to burrow. They need to adapt to nocturnal life.

14 Adaptations of Plants Many plants grow way underground, where it can survive a fire. Many have roots 3.5 inches into the ground, incase of a drought. Many have narrow leaves, which will loose less water to evaporation compared to the thicker leaves. They have brightly colored plants which will attract pollinators like bees.
