HOMEWORK: - Chapter 5 Homework Packet Assigned (due Monday, Nov. 5) - “A Closer Look at Land Biomes” Worksheet assigned (due Fri., Nov. 2) Read Chapter 5, Lessons 3 and 4 (to be ready for class tomorrow) WARM UP: Be as quiet as you can so as to not miss any important information in the Brain POP video when it starts.
2
Today’s Goal: SWBAT demonstrate the ability to describe characteristics of different land biomes by completing a reference worksheet giving characteristics and pictures of each biome
3
First up….. Some review……
Temperate Rainforest - Wet, cool climate; mosses cover rocks; lots of rain!!!!!!!! - Plants: maple, spruce - Animals: elk, cougar, bears, squirrels, raccoons, owls - West coast of North America, far Southern Tip of West Coast of South America, and other places.
6
Tropical Rainforest Most diverse land biome (greatest amount of different kinds of species) Warm and relatively humid all year long; lots of rain!!!!!!!!! Plants: orchids, palm trees, banyan trees, ginger, etc. (many!!!!) Animals: monkeys, kinkajou, civet cat, lizards, tree frogs, etc. (many!!!!) Found along the equator
9
Deciduous Forest Cool winters and warm to hot summers; moderate precipitation Plants: oak, elm, maple, hickory Animals: bears, snakes, frogs, salamanders, foxes, deer Eastern United States and Central Europe
11
Grassland Generally inland and experience a Continental Climate (long bitter cold Winters and short hot Summers – depends how far North or South) with moderate low rainfall – less than deciduous forest Plants: grasses and wild flowers – very few trees Animals: prairie dogs, wolves, coyotes, zebra, bison, many types of antelope, re-introduced wild horses (Mongolia) Central North America, Eastern South America, Central Asia, Central and Southern Africa
13
Taiga Largest land biome; long, bitter cold Winters and cool Summers; moderate rainfall Plants: conifers (spruce, fir, pine), tough grass and small tough shrubs (heather), rhubarb Animals: bear, elk, moose wolves, Siberian tiger, deer Northern North America and Northern Asia (Southern Siberia and all across Northern Russia into Finland)
15
Desert Very dry (less than 25cm of rain all year); large temperature fluctuations between day and night. Winters and nights can be freezing cold and Summers and days can be roasting hot to the point of killing a person Plants: cacti and other succulents; mesquite, acacia, and other tough bushes Animals: emu, camels, scorpion, black widow spider, rattlesnakes Found on every continent on Earth – even Antarctica = frozen desert – large deserts in Southwestern US and Northern Mexico, Southwestern Asia, Northern Africa, and Australia
17
Tundra Very cold biome with very little precipitation; very long, cold, cold, biting cold Winters and short cold Summers; ground is frozen solid most of the year – top layer melts in Summer and stays frozen underneath Plants: heather and small, short, tough grasses and shrubs Animals: Rodents (lemmings), rabbits, caribou/reindeer, foxes, weasels, owls Far Northern North America and far Northern Asia (far Northern Siberia)

Closing it up… Write one thing you learned today in your science notebook and show me before you leave.
