1 Dry-Land Environments
Forests SOL 3.6

2 What are three things that make an environment different?
Climate Animals that live there Plants that grow there

3 What are four examples of Dry-Land Environments?
Deserts Grasslands Rain Forests Forests

4 Forests can be found around the world.

5 The largest forests can be found in Asia, Europe, and North America

6 A forest is a type of dry-land environment that is covered with trees.
About 1/3 of the U.S. is covered by forest environments.

7 There are two different types of Forests.
Deciduous Forests and Coniferous Forests

8 Deciduous Forests The trees in these types of forests loose their leaves. Their climates change from warm wet summers to cold winters.

9 Coniferous Forests Coniferous forests are made up of evergreen trees that produce their seeds in cones (pinecones). Coniferous Forests have a long cold winter climate.

10 There are many different populations of animals that live in a forest.

11 A population is a group of living things that are the same and live in the same place.

12 There are herbivores in a forest.
Herbivores eat plants, mushrooms, nuts, seeds, and tree sap.

13 There are carnivores in a forest.
Carnivores are meat eaters.

14 There are omnivores in a forest.
Animals that eat both plants and animals are omnivores.

16 The animal populations…

17 …and the plant populations in a forest…

18 …make up a Forest Community.

19 A community is all the populations that live together in one location.

20 Review Forests can be found all over the world.
The climate in deciduous forests have warm wet summers and cold winters. The climate in coniferous forests have long cold winters. Herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores all live in forests. Several forest populations form a forest community.
