1 AQA EL Science Component 1 Biology The Human Body

2 Biology - The Human Body Cells
Recall the parts of human cells: Describe how specialised cells are adapted for their function.

3 Have you ever wondered what we (humans) are made of?

5 Review : What is a cell?tissue?organ?system?
Biology - The Human Body Cells Review : What is a cell?tissue?organ?system? Animals and plants are made of cells. Cells form the basic "building blocks" for living things. Some cells have specialised functions. Tissues (e.g. muscle) are made from cells of a similar type. Organs (e.g. heart, lungs) are made from tissues Systems are made from several organs working together.

6 Biology - The Human Body Cells
What are cells? Cells Cells are very small. They are the basic building blocks of all animals and plants. These photographs show cells seen through a microscope. Animal cells Cheek cells These are cheek cells, seen through a microscope: Plant cells Onion cells These are onion cells, seen through a microscope:

7 Biology - The Human Body Cells
Animal cells Video about cells Animal cells Animal cells usually have an irregular shape. Cells are made up of different parts. It is easier to explain what these parts are by using diagrams like the ones below.

8 Animal cell – part & function
Biology - The Human Body Cells Animal cell – part & function Part Function – what is does Cell membrane Controls what substances can get into and out of the cell. Cytoplasm Jelly-like substance, where chemical reactions happen. In plant cells there's a thin lining, whereas in animal cells most of the cell is cytoplasm. Nucleus Controls what happens inside the cell. Carries genetic information. In exams don't call the nucleus the 'brain' of the cell. That is not a good description and will not get you marks.

9 Biology - The Human Body Cells
Review Can you name the parts of human cells: N… ? C… ? Cell m… ? Can you remember the function (what it does) of each part?
