Let’s “Talk” about Disability
This module is designed to enhance understanding of the everyday challenges faced by people with disabilities including some of ways in which disability is created or made more limiting by the design of processes, services, systems, and spaces and by the attitudes and assumptions of others about what it means to be a person with a disability.
This activity uses a film clip. This clip can either be played from a menu in your hard drive or can be embedded into your PowerPoint presentation. For help with playing the film clip, see the “Technical Trouble Shooting” sheet in this guide.

The “tables have been turned” as a man wakes up in a world where he is the only person who does not have a disability.
As you watch, note some of the barriers and challenges he faces interacting in a world where he is “different.”

Katie, can you make sure the video is properly embedded in the PPT? It should be the version that is closed captioned and includes a sign language interpreter on screen.
After playing the clip, ask participants to describe the barriers, frustrations and humiliations the man experienced as he went through a world where he was “different.”
Here are some of the points participants might have noted while viewing the clip:
• Two women offer condescending “help” when they realize he cannot communicate.
• He cannot get a taxi because he must wait for the “special” taxis.
• He cannot enter a building independently as he must wait for someone else to use the lift.
• The man helping him use the lift makes an offensive comment about “I think you people are very brave...”
• The receptionist is clearly uncomfortable in communicating with him and does not listen to him.
• The documents he is supposed to read prior to the interview are all in Braille—a format inaccessible to him.
• When he goes for a job interview, he is met with whispers and stares.
• The lead interviewer is condescendingly polite and does not treat him as a professional equal.
• He cannot go on a bus home because it’s “Only for handicapped.”
