1 Plagiarism and other dangers to avoid
An Honest Paper Plagiarism and other dangers to avoid

2 Let’s write a paper about unemployment in Indonesia
We’ll use the ancient method of cut-and-paste From Wikipedia and Google

3 Writing: what’s the point?
Let’s brainstorm on the board

4 Let’s write a REAL paper
What do YOU think about unemployment in Indonesia? Brainstorm. Write a tentative thesis statement. Look for background sources. Look for sources that support your idea. Look for sources that disagree with your idea. Paraphrase, summarize, quote, and contextualize. Rewrite your thesis.

5 What is Plagiarism? Taking words or ideas from another source without correctly citing that source. Can be intentional or unintentional. Includes taking ideas and information without giving a source, even if you change the words. At Oberlin, plagiarism is most common among young students and foreign students. Plagiarism is becoming more common due to the internet.

6 Examples of plagiarism
Words: copying a paragraph from another book into your paper without using quotation marks. Ideas: Using another writer’s argument and pretending it is your own.

7 Copying/ buying a whole paper

8 Copying sections of other papers into your own without citations.

9 Copying sections of other papers with citations, but keeping the same words.

10 Using another person’s ideas without a citation

11 Why is it wrong? Dishonest and a form of stealing
Leads to bad and boring papers Discourages you from developing your own ideas and critical thinking You cannot publish research or books. Not accepted internationally.

12 How do you avoid plagiarism?
Cite all sources you use when writing. If you use the same words as the original, put them in quotation marks or a smaller margin for large quotations. Rewrite in your own words (paraphrase) and include citations.

13 Why is citation important?
Writers and academics make their money and reputation from their words and ideas. They do not want people to steal them. You have to be able to check where information in a paper is from because it could be from a bad source. You want to make it clear which arguments and ideas are your own.

14 Sample citation style A Bibliography at the end is not enough.
Footnotes or parenthetical citations also necessary. Google “MLA citation” What information is needed? Brainstorm.

15 The Internet You also must cite all internet sources that you use.
Don’t just cut and paste internet sources--you also have to paraphrase. Be careful of internet sources, many are not accurate or are biased.

16 Google If you copy words from a website, your teacher can find them with google. is not enough for a citation. You must put the exact name and address of the web page you use.

17 Wikipedia A good start to find ideas. Not a good source.
