1 Universal design for learning
Key Elements of UDL

2 Like UDL itself, the guidelines are flexible they should be mixed and matched in the curriculum and with individual learners as appropriate. They are not meant to be “prescriptions” but strategies that can be employed to overcome the barriers inherent in most existing curricula.

3 “…educators may find an array of individual uses for the guidelines… they can be most useful…as tools to support the design of lessons or units, as tools to assess instructional methods and materials and as tools for facilitating discussion…”

4 The UDL guidelines: tools for…
Designing lessons/units Assessing of methods and materials Facilitating discussion about practice

7 Guidelines Review Directions
Identify an example of how you implement each guideline on Session 4 UDL Connect.

8 GOALS There are many ways to get to the same place.

9 There are two types of standards.
Content Standards Method Standards What do students actually have to know – independent of what they can write, read, perform, etc... This is knowledge they need to have before they can apply it. What do students have to do? This focuses on specific tasks such as writing, solving an algebraic equation, reading, performing a piece of music, serving a tennis ball, etc...

10 Barriers Activity Directions
The students will read the novel “Invisible Man” and write a three-page, typed paper about its depiction of cultural, economic, political and social development in mid-20th century America. Identify and play patterns using B, A, and G on a recorder. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the vocabulary words agility and speed by dribbling the soccer ball. Tell and write time in hours and half-hours using analog and digital clocks. Barriers Activity Directions Select a goal, and identify the barriers on UDL Connect Session 4.
