Founder and Year Founded
Massachusetts- was founded by John Wintherope in year New Hampshire- was founded in 1638 John Wheelwright. Rhode Island- was founded in 1636 by Rodger Williams. Connecticut- was founded in in 1635 by Thomas Hooker.

Why were they founded? Massachusetts- Was founded when the Mayflower went off course and landed in Massachusetts. Originally wanted to go to Virginia. New Hampshire- the land in the New World was granted to captain John Mason who lived in Hampshire.

Why were they founded? Rhode island- Rodger Williams and his supporters of religious freedom and separation from the church. Connecticut- individuals from the Massachusetts colony moved to what would become Connecticut because they were looking for more freedom and financial opportunities.

Geographical Characteristics
Massachusetts- Has played a significant role in American history since the pilgrims seeking religious freedom founded Plymouth colony in 1620 as one of the most important of the 13 colonies. New Hampshire- They had mountains which provided trees and rivers to fish. But, poor soil made it hard to grow crops.

Rhode Island – Had very low hills narrow valleys, forests and numerous marshlands . Had good soil for crops like corn , beans and squash. Connecticut – Since they had a lot of water around them they had good soil which meant they had crops. Also since had a lot of water they could fish.

Role of Religion Massachusetts - The major religion was Christianity . There were two sides the Quakers and the Puritans. The Puritans were strict about their beliefs. This led to people leaving the colony. Connecticut - Colonial rule by the strict leadership of one type of church slowly gave way to the desire by colonists to practice the faith of their choice.

Role of religion Rhode Island - Christian religious groups played an influential role in each of the British colonies. Most attempted to enforce strict religious observance through both colony and town rules. New Hampshire- Puritans governed themselves. The religion in New Hampshire was mostly mixed. This was caused by a religious problem in Massachusetts that caused some people to move.

Economic Conditions Massachusetts- The ships in the Massachusetts colony began trading in the year 1632 with other colonies and England. Some things they trade were fur, lumber, and fisheries.

Economic Conditions Connecticut- They have fertile soil and major industries in wheat, corn, and fishing. Other industries were tobacco, livestock and ship building.

Economic Conditions Rhode Island- Rhode island depended on what was referred as the triangle trade to sustain its economy. This consisted of molasses, sending rum to Africa in exchange for slaves, and then trading the slaves with the West Indies for more molasses.

Economic Conditions New Hampshire- Lumber, fish , masts for the royal navy. They have some good mines and produce very good iron.
