Dividing Fractions Using Visual Models
2
Dividing fractions using visual models only has 4 little tiny baby steps!
1. Create a common denominator 2. Draw a picture to represent the first fraction/ mixed number 3. The numerator of the second fraction tells us how many pieces should be in each group 4. Count how many groups you have!
3
Let’s start with something easy… let’s try 1½÷¼
***This question is asking us how many ¼ pieces are in 1½*** Step 1: Create a common denominator! Step 2: Draw a picture to represent the first fraction
4
1 3 5 2 4 6 Step 4: We circled 6 groups, so our answer is 6!
Step 3:The numerator of the second fraction tells us how many pieces should be in each group 1 3 5 2 4 6 Step 4: We circled 6 groups, so our answer is 6! ****There are 6 groups of ¼ in 1 ½ !****
5
Let’s try one with a whole number!
***Remember! This is asking us how many 2/3 pieces are in 2*** Let’s start by drawing the first number- 2
6
Now since our only denominator is 3, we need to split our pictures into thirds!
Now our numerator is telling us to circle groups of 2!
7
1 3 2 Now we just count our groups!
We counted 3 groups, so now we know that there are 3 groups of 2/3 in 2!
8
Sometimes you may get an answer that is a fraction! Let’s try one!
Step 1: Make a common denominator!
9
1 2 3 Step 2: Draw the first fraction!
Step 3: Circle groups of the 2nd fraction’s numerator!
10
Now try this! 1 2

Lovin it?! Have some more!

Can’t get enough?!
