Vanished When John White returned to Roanoke, he found the settlement deserted. The houses were empty, vines sprouting from the floor and windows. Strangely the word CROATOAN, the name of a nearby island, was carved on a tree. Due to a storm, John White was not able to sail to the island to investigate, and instead sailed back to England. To this day, the fate of Roanoke’s settlers remains a mystery.
