A cell is a structure containing cytoplasm enclosed by a cell membrane.

A student conducted an experiment in which she placed a piece of meat in three jars. One jar had a sealed lid, a second had a screen, and the third had no top at all. After 20 days of being left out in the same conditions she came back to observe the results. She noticed that the jar without a lid had maggots growing in it while the other two did not. What part of cell theory does this experiment best support? How do you know?

The part of cell theory that this best supports is that all cells come from pre-existing cells. This is because the jars with lids did not produce maggots which means the maggots must have come from cells found outside the jars.

A scientist observes 5,000 different specimens under a microscope. His notes indicate that he described seeing “walled compartments” in all 5,000 of his specimens when viewed under a microscope. What part of cell theory does this best support? How do you know?

The theory of spontaneous generation included the idea that simple organisms like worms and flies were created from abiotic (non-living) things like mud. In the 1600’s Francesco Redi performed an experiment. Maggots developed from the eggs laid by flies in the first flask. No maggots were developed in the remaining two flasks.
The results of this experiment provided evidence that:
