1 History of the Swastika
By Nick, Aidan, Pauline, Jesse and Alex

2 Swastika Meaning The Swastika was originally a sign of well being based on its original language of Sanskrit. In Sanskrit "su" means "well" and "asti" means "being". It can also be called Gammadion, Hakenkreuz, and Flyfot. Since the Holocaust the "hooked cross" has been associated with Hitler and his cause.

3 Origins of the swastika
The swastika now is fully tied with the Nazis and Hitler but it was not always a symbol of hate The word and symbol began being used by Buddhists and in Aryan worship of the sun It was an eastern symbol of peace and luck, In the later 19th century it became more popular in the Americas  By the early 20th century it was a trend  Many companies put it in their logos or promotions  Even Coca-Cola used the swastika for positive promotion.

4 The use of the Swastika in artwork
The use of the swastika in artwork varies from culture to culture. But it was used in many things other than artwork through out history since it was a symbol of life, light, luck, love, success, eternity, and goodness.

5 The Nazi's Use of the Swastika
Sought a design that would attract the masses Wanted a vivid symbol to distinguish it from rival groups Picked the swastika as a symbol of racial purity and displayed it on a red background The swastika was the main Nazi symbol "Despite its original meaning for the ancient Germanic peoples, and despite its near-worldwide occurrence, by this time the popular German imagination saw it only-and, of course, with reference to its earlier meaning, mistakenly-as a symbol of that which was specifically German and 'Aryan'"(McCoy).

6 Recent use of the Swastika
Swastika still in use as a hate symbol Used by KKK, Council of Conservative Citizens and American Freedom Party In the Nationalist Society Movement the swastika has been replaced with the Othala Rune A recent example of swastika would be the pretests in Charlottesville over the removal of a statue of Robert E. Lee
