1 An Analysis of a Lowell Woman’s Protest

2 Contextual Information of the time period
During this time period known as the Industrial Revolution, there were lots of technological and agricultural advantages and changes in America. James Watt is credited for the invention of the steam engine that changed transportation across rivers. During this time factory use became more prevalent. In these factories the workers were seen as “ hands” used to do work. This explains all of the poor working conditions. This is the time period in America where metals were being implicated into farm work.

3 Contextual information about the author
The author in this passage is not introduced by name but we do know that she is a worker herself. Working in the Lowell Factory brought a sense of freedom to some of the girls who worked there. By 1840 there were over 8,000 textile workers employed. They were often referred to as mill-girls or factory-girls. During the 1830’s the average female worker made $3.25 for 70-plus work hours. girls-and-factory-system-1840
