Objective 4: Analyze various forms of energy and how living organisms sense and respond to energy
a) Analyze the cyclic nature of potential and kinetic energy (e.g., a bouncing ball, a pendulum). b) Trace the conversion of energy from one form of energy to another (e.g., light to chemical to mechanical). c) Cite examples of how organisms sense various types of energy. d) Investigate and report the response of various organisms to changes in energy (e.g., plant response to light, human response to motion, sound, light, insects’ response to changes in light intensity). e) Investigate and describe how engineers have developed devices to help us sense various types of energy (e.g., seismographs, eyeglasses, telescopes, hearing aids).
3
Energy Energy is never created or destroyed.
It is just converted from one form to another.
4
Kinetic Potential Kinetic Energy= Energy of motion
Potential Energy= Stored energy
5
Energy Conversion Energy isn’t created or destroyed, just converted from one form to another.
6
Different types of energy
Potential: Gravitational potential= Distance from a center of gravity Elastic potential= Literally elastic, magnetic etc. Chemical potential= food etc. Kinetic (Any energy that moves) Seismic waves Sound Motion Temperature (speed of molecules)
7
Energy is always converting.
8
Organisms Sense Energy in Different Ways
Many organisms have eyes and ears. Snakes sense infrared to help them track predators. Bats use sonar.
9
Living Organisms Respond to Energy.
People look when they hear a noise. Dogs bark when they hear noises. People cover their ears when they hear a loud noise etc. Fish swim away when they feel vibration.
10
Plants response to energy
Plants roots are programed to grow towards gravity and the stems are programed to grow away. This is gravitropism. Plants are also programed to respond to light. This is heliotropism.
11
Humans Create Technology to Help us Sense and use Energy.
Seismographs Sonar Detection Eyeglasses Hearing Aids Radios Telescope Wifi Electricity

4:4 Quiz What happens to the kinetic and potential energy as you throw a ball in the air? Why type of energy conversions happen when you turn a TV on? How do organisms sense and respond to different types of energy? What technologies have we developed to help us use and identify energy?
