What are some things that you notice, what are some things that you wonder? The custodians are considering painting our classroom next summer. In order to determine how much paint they must buy, the custodians need to know certain things about the walls. They also need to know that a gallon of paint covers a certain amount of area.

So I can... Today I will be able to….
Use composition or decomposition of polygons So I can... Determine the area of missing regions or composite figures. I will know I got it when I can complete at least 3 out of the 4 stations involving real world problems independently or with my partners with at least 80% accuracy. 6.G.A.1

Language Objective By the end of the lesson, students will be able to use the language domains of reading and writing to communicate the academic math language of polygons. They will verbally communicate and write/determine the area of missing regions or composite figures. They will show their understanding when they can complete at least 3 out of the 4 stations involving real world problems independently or with a partners with at least 80% accuracy. Academic Math Language Vocabulary: polygon, composition, decomposition, composite,

Another way to find the area of the wall is to notice that we can draw an 8 foot by 10 foot rectangle around the wall. This rectangle has an area of 80 square feet. To get the wall, we remove two right triangles. Together, these make half of a 2 foot by 8 foot rectangle and so they have an area of 8 square feet. Hence, the area of the wall is = 72 square feet.
