Campaigns for Women’s Suffrage
By middle class women were better educated and allowed to vote in New Zealand Some men thought women were too irrational, emotional and suited to politics Campaigns begin in 1866 1897- NUWSS is formed Women’s Suffrage Believe in peaceful tactics Nicknamed Suffragists Nicknamed the Suffragettes 1903 WSPU is formed “Deeds not words” Led by Emmeline Pankhurst Membership skyrocketed when WSPU became violent 1910- become more violent

She was a militant activist who fought for women’s suffrage in Britain. Jailed 9 times Force fed 49 times She stepped in front of King George V’s horse at the Epsom Derby on June 4th, 1913 She died as a result of her wounds Funeral was organised by WSPU- thousands of suffragettes lined the streets of London
