The Region is multi-hazard prone; common features of disasters
National loss and gross domestic loss (human lives, crops, livelihoods, infrastructures, houses, livestock); hindrance to the growth and development Cross-border issues such as river water sharing, dam and embankment management, absence of international/cross-border dialogue to resolve these issues (e.g. Nepal and Bihar floods – Koshi River dam breakage) Negligence in regard to protection of human lives and dignity
13
Did you know? Unpredictable rainfall, together with rising sea levels and higher sea temperatures will lead to more frequent storms, floods and droughts. By 2050, 200 million people could be rendered homeless due to these disasters. “Freshwater availability in Central, South and East and Southeast Asia particularly in large river basins is likely to decrease due to climate change, along with population growth and rising standard of living, which could adversely affect more than a billion people in Asia by the 2050s,” the report stated.
