Betancuria Municipality.
Betancuria is a Canarian municipality belonging to the province of Las Palmas. It is situated on the west coast of the island of Fuerteventura.

Founder: Its name comes from the Norman Juan de Bethencourt, who founded it with Gadifer de La Salle in 1404.

Importance of Betancuria.
Since the conquest, Betancuria became the capital and headquarters of various governamental bodies, both religious and administrative.

Cathedral Church of St. Mary of Betancuria
In 1593 it was virtually wiped out by a Berber invasion, and the Cathedral Church of St. Mary of Betancuria was destroyed, but it was rebuilt years later.

The decline of Betancuria
From the XIX century, Betancuria was gradually losing power in favour of other population centers, such as Pájara, La Oliva, Antigua and Puerto de Cabras. Finally, in 1834 it lost the capital of the island.
