2. Comic Relief Origins
Jane Tewson conceptualised Comic Relief as a response to African famine of 1985
On Christmas Day 1985, Comic Relief was launched on Noel Edmund’s Late, Late Breakfast Show from a refugee camp in Sudan
The first live fundraising show, “Comic Relief Utterly, Utterly Live” was held on the 4th April 1986
The first Red Nose Day telethon took place on 8th February 1988, hosted by Lenny Henry in Ethiopia, raising £15 million

3. About the charity
Aims to “bring about positive and lasting change in the lives of poor and disadvantaged people, which we believe requires investing in work that addresses people’s immediate needs as well as tackling the root causes of poverty and injustice.”
Harbors the “Golden Pound Principle” meaning every pound donated is spent on the charity projects it supports
Supported by the BBC, BT and Sainsbury’s
Red Nose Day occurs every two years, alternating with Sport Relief
Money raised goes towards significant crises in the UK and across the world, as well as funding grants to tackle ongoing problems, regional development, and community projects

4. The difference made
Supported disabled people, contributing to the Disability Discrimination Act of 1995, establishing rights for disabled people in the UK
Contributed to the return of land seized in apartheid South Africa to the people of Elandskloof in 1996
Raised awareness about elder abuse and worked with the Department of Health to produce elder abuse prevalence study, resulting in the government taking measures to protect older people
Influenced the establishment of similar charities in the USA, Australia, Germany, Russia, Iceland, Finland, and Belgium
As of RND 2015, the charity has raised £1 billion over its 30 year history

7. What Red Nose Day aims to help this year
Immunisation - since last RND, more than children in Africa have been vaccinated
Mental health - in the UK, 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem in the course of a year
Vulnerable young people - children are affected by extreme poverty the most
Tackling domestic violence - funding the National Domestic Violence Helpline
Fighting malaria - since last RND, more than children under 5 have been treated with anti-malarial drugs
