How To Get Graphics Into Multimedia Projects
9/20/2018 How To Get Graphics Into Multimedia Projects By using scanners, digital cameras, and other input devices, any art form can be turned into a computer graphic. The Internet Create your own Clip Art libraries

Graphics are stored in a variety of files and formats.
9/20/2018 Graphic Formats Graphics are stored in a variety of files and formats. BMP - windows default TIF- large with many colors JPEG - common on internet GIF - common on internet PICT- Macintosh default

Two types of strategies of putting graphics in the computer.
9/20/2018 Two types of strategies of putting graphics in the computer. Raster or Bitmap images Vector or Metafile images
12
9/20/2018 Raster Or Bitmap Most common, most comprehensive- called paint programs- Photoshop, Painter The product looks as much as possible as the original product. These images are made up of pixels. A pixel is defined as a picture element. It is the smallest recorded area in a picture. Bitmaps can be stretched by resizing but image often distorted. Photo’s are always bitmapped.
13
Raster-based images What is raster/bitmap? Individual Pixel
Pixel Info: RGB Value Red (233) Green (56) Blue (156) Position X coordinate (259) Y coordinate (848) Individual Pixel
14
The Color Depth of One Pixel
9/20/2018 The Color Depth of One Pixel 1 bit = two colors 4 bits = 16 colors 8 bits or (1 byte) = 256 colors 16 bits = Thousands 24 bits = 16,777,215 colors (millions) 32 bits = Billions 48 bits = Trillions
15
9/20/2018 Vector Images Based on drawing elements or objects to create an image.-Illustrator Vector images stored as a series of commands or a recipe. Can be resized without losing the integrity of the image. Do not take a lot of memory to store. Disadvantage is is a limited amount of detail can be presented in one image.

Standard Monitors 14-15” Monitor 640 x 480 resolution
9/20/2018 Standard Monitors 14-15” Monitor x 480 resolution 17” Monitor x 600 resolution Pixels 72 dots per inch. Bigger monitors have bigger dots.
17
9/20/2018 Know Your Final Output Most Multimedia presentations are for the computer screen - 72 dpi. Printing could be 300 or 600 dpi. Too much dpi takes up too much storage and take longer to work with. Not enough dpi does not look very good.

Know How the Human Eye Sees
9/20/2018 Know How the Human Eye Sees Retina contains millions of light sensitive cells. Some cells see brightness (rods) Some cells see three bands of color (cones) A collection of dots will be seen as a solid object. Mezzo tinting- Italian artists used this effect.
19
9/20/2018 Aliasing- When the dots are large- zoomed-out eyes notice edges called jagged edges. When a bitmap is stretched to a larger size- they looked jagged or rough.
20
9/20/2018 Anti-aliasing Trick is to minimize the jagged lines by the edges of the black inserting an in between shade of gray.
21
Tips for Web Graphics Make images precise size needed
If possible, reduce number of colors needed Find a compromise between quality and size Use the appropriate file format
