Needs Assessment CPR instruction is available through Boardman Corporate University training. Northwest Valley Community College does not offer any safety or health classes. Personnel adequately trained to render first aid is a requirement of any workplace. The proposed First Aid/CPR/AED class will be offered through the Boardman Corporate University (BCU) will provide OSHA approved initial and refresher training for all employees of the Baderman Island Resort. By standard number c, OSHA requires adequately trained personnel to render first aid in any workplace. (Occupational Safety & Health Administration, 2009) Instructional Plan Template | Slide 2

Instructional Goal According to the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA), first aid is the emergency care provided before emergency medical treatment becomes available. OSHA identifies four elements to a workplace first aid program. First Aid/CPR/AED is designed to meet OSHA standards for medical and first aid. Topics include basic first aid intervention, basic adult cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) including the use of automated external defibrillators (AED), and universal precautions for self-protection. According to OSHA (2006), there are four elements to a workplace first aid program. This training will help to meet two of those four elements: Employees at all levels must be equally involved with program implementation. Safety and health training provided to care for the injuries and illnesses that are not prevented. Instructional Plan Template | Slide 3

Performance-Based Objectives
After completing the First Aid/CPR/AED class, the employee should be able to: Demonstrate the appropriate first aid response to a non-life threatening injury experienced by another person using the materials found in a standard first aid kit Identify and verbalize the characteristics of an emergency situation In critical situations, context not only supports memory (Fischer, 1998) but is an important consideration in determining action. Summative Assessment and Learning Outcomes
Student skill and knowledge will be assessed through: Individual Skill Performances Group Skill Performances Criterion Referenced Constructed Response Discussion Peer-To-Peer Assessment Objective Multiple Choice Final Test Check-off skill sheets provided by the American Red Cross (2011) are available for skill assessments. Discussions concerning patient and situation assessment may have a range of considerations making both criterion referenced constructed response and peer-to-peer evaluations most appropriate (Brown & Green, 2006) Instructional Plan Template | Slide 5

Learner Characteristics
As a workplace training program, all employees of the Baderman Island Resort will be trained in First Aid/CPR/AED Classes will consist of: 8-12 learners Casual part-time employees through full-time career professional executives Ages 16 and older High School through Graduate education levels A variety of activity and assessment approaches are included to accommodate the variety of learning styles expected In order to insure the presence of adequately trained personnel at any workplace as required by OSHA (2009), every employee will be trained in First Aid/CPR/AED. The only employees exempt from this training requirement are those that require a higher level of training as a BFOQ. Examples of these positions include employed lifeguards and EMTs. Learning Context Instructional setting – classroom setting , rotating between meeting rooms in: Meredith Visitors Center The Tenney Meloncon Convention Center Golf Clubhouse The application setting for this training will be the entire Baderman Island Resort. This includes recreation, dining, convention, garden, and office settings Situation Assessment Scenarios will be directly linked to various resort facilities Instructional Plan Template | Slide 7

Delivery Modality First Aid/CPR/AED will be delivered primarily as an instructor-led synchronous classroom The program activities will include: Lecture Guided Discussion Video Instruction Skill Demonstration Skill Practice Skill practice will be maximized to incorporate kinesthetic learning. Guided discussion will include hypothetical scenarios to contextualize the training into the application setting. Instructional Plan Template | Slide 8

Plan for Implementation
The course offered by BCU will be the current American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED program First Aid/CPR/AED will be presented in one five hour session The course will be offered once every two weeks. The day of the week, time of day, and location will change every session to best accommodate all employees Monday thru Saturday Morning, Afternoon, Evening Four Different Locations Instruction will be carried out by Boardman Corporate University instructors certified by the American Red Cross. The American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED program meets OSHA requirements for a workplace first aid program (OSHA, 2006). The course will be offered every other week on different days, times, and locations. The scheduled cycle will be repeated every 26 weeks. Additional offerings may be scheduled for an identified need. For example, seasonal hiring for the summer may necessitate more classroom slots than would be available through the scheduled rotation. Instructional Plan Template | Slide 9

Instructional Resources
Classes will be conducted in: Meredith Visitors Center The Tenney Meloncon Convention Center Golf Clubhouse Materials required for each class includes: 2 Flip Charts and Markers Video projection system 6 First Aid kits 4 AED units Coordination with facilities is required to insure reservation of meeting rooms and seating for 12 participants and 2 instructors Instructional Plan Template | Slide 10

Formative Assessment Effectiveness of the training program will be assessed simultaneously with learner evaluation strategies Skill acquisition will be assessed through both Individual and Group Skill Performances Question and Answer Sessions will address emergency situations not feasibly reproduced within a classroom Peer To Peer Assessments will address the identification of emergency situation characteristics Open-Ended Questions conclude each unit Effectiveness of the training program will be assessed through learner evaluation strategies. Achievement of objectives will be assessed through multiple strategies. Skill acquisition will be assessed through both individual and group skill performances. Additionally, criterion referenced constructed response verbal assessments presented in a question and answer format will help with emergency situations not feasible within a classroom. In conjunction with group skill performances, peer to peer assessments will address the identification of emergency situations. Similarly, open ended surveys presented at the end of each unit will help to identify any deficiencies in the instruction. Instructional Plan Template | Slide 11

Evaluation Strategies
End of course student survey to assess course and instructor effectiveness Quantitative and qualitative analysis of course evaluation data to identify improvement opportunities Workplace drills conducted quarterly to assess student achievement on the Performance-Based Objectives Immediate and quarterly evaluation of emergency incident reports to evaluate application of the training A review of assessments from each class could review areas of potential improvement for each instructor. A holistic review of all assessments can reveal programatic improvement opportunities. Drills will put skill application into context. Instructional Plan Template | Slide 12

Outcome Review Student Behavior Criteria for evaluating the program:
verbal assessment of the emergency situation verbal assessment of the first aid appropriate to the injury skill demonstration appropriate to the situation and injury assessment verbal assessment of the care necessary to maintain life skill demonstration appropriate to the situation and patient assessment Criteria can be evaluated on 4 different levels: Unidentified Acknowledged General Course of Action appropriate Specific Course of Action appropriate Verbalizing any assessment is important to make sure it is completed in the proper sequence (American Red Cross, 2011). Recommendations (After reading the information below, delete and insert your information.)
Depending on the results of the outcome review, some changes to the program may be recommended. A greater emphasis on skill practice may help to instill learner confidence Emphasis on situations and contexts encountered at the Baderman Island Resort may make assessment easier Recertification may be broken out from the full class The current American Red Cross Program has decades of feedback involved in the development. As such, I do not anticipate needing changes. However, tailoring the program to the needs of the Baderman Island Resort staff may require minor modifications. Instructional Plan Template | Slide 14
