Multi-Use Trail Proposal
Centennial Park, Grimsby Amanda Polewski, Danielle Vella, Kate Stasiak
2
Centennial Park needs a multi-use trail!
When we began working on this project and visited the park, it was obvious that Grimsby residents already use the park; however without an embedded pathway for residents to access, the park fails to live up to its true potential So installing a multi-use trail not only maintains the integrity of the green space, but will provide a safe, accessible, and user-friendly place for residents of all ages to use
3
Benefits of Centennial Trail
Health and Fitness There are major pushes from both provincial and regional levels of government to increase physical activity, especially among the populations youth There has been a trend in increasing obesity due to declining activity levels, but having a multi-use trail system in place within a key park in the Town that is accessible would encourage increased physical activity by all users Being able to use this outdoor space is a cost-effective way for residents to exercise, and will also promote active transportation to and from the trail
4
Benefits of Centennial Trail
8-80 Cities Initiative The 8-80 philosophy rests on the idea that if you create a city that’s good for an 8 year old and good for an 8- year old, you will create a successful city for everyone 8-80 cities nurture the need to be physically active by providing safe, accessible and enjoyable places for everyone to walk, bike and be active as part of their daily routine Centennial Trail will provide a place to promote sustainable and healthy lifestyles for everyone, regardless of age or ability
5
Benefits of Centennial Trail
Accessibility The specific technical provisions regarding surfacing, slope and width of Centennial Trail will be designed with accessibility in mind The trail will adhere to the requirements set out in various provincial regulations to ensure that the trail not only meets legislation, but also ensures that all groups within the community are accommodated
6
Benefits of Centennial Trail
Linking Communities Centennial Trail will provide a place for people to gather, socialize, and engage in community events within Centennial Park Community events could be organized, such as Get Fit Days, cross-country and other track events The trail will be valuable in fulfilling other community objectives, such as youth development, social and cultural exchange and community building The Trail can be extended to connect to the Bruce Trail and Ridge Road which will facilitate further community linking
7
Benefits of Centennial Trail
Exposure to the Escarpment Centennial Park is the only one that provides access to the base of the escarpment This allows residents to enjoy the natural landscape and experience a unique place within their community

Material Justification
Features: Low maintenance Minimal environmental effects Based on legislation #191/11 It is necessary to use asphalt as all trails must be accessible Looked at different aspects Total would be $85,000 - $4,000 allocated to site restoration Bridge is not critical to the construction of the trail, but it is recommended Many potential sponsors/ grants that can be applied for to help with funding different parts of the trail Don Kirkwood Estimating services Smooth surface creating accessibility for all Easy installation on slopes and curves

Funding Options The Ontario Trillium Foundation
Canada’s leading grant producer Community grant investments in proposals that have a local impact – grant amounts vary TD Friends of the Environmental Foundation Funds environmental projects and programs Eligibility for grant amounts when multi-use trail can be seen as an “urban greening project” Evergreen Leading funder of community and school greening projects $5.7 million funded over 2,000 community greening projects in parks and public spaces Many potential sponsors and grants have been identified to help reduce the overall costs We have identified about 8, but here are some of the highlighted ones
