1 Global Climate Change and Future Predictions
By: Esteban Herrera

2 What do you know? (Worksheet)

3 Objective Analyze Geoscience data and the results from global climate models to make evidence-based forecast of current of global change and associated future impact to Earth’s systems.

4 What is Climate? The average weather, usually refers to average weather conditions over long periods Seasons Wet winters and warm summers? Los Angeles Climate Climate is not Weather

5 What is Weather? What’s happening now or over some short time period— this hour, today, this week in the atmosphere near the ground Temperature Pressure Precipitation Humid New York? Weather

6 Global Warming

7 Global Warming Today 474 (166 years) The past two years have a record for the warmest ever 2016 is on its way 2016 had hottest March on record March 2016 set a new record temperature for this time of year

8 Geoscience Data

9 Consequences of Global Climate Change
Glaciers have shrunk Rivers and lakes are breaking up earlier Plant and animal ranges (natural response to global climate change) have shifted Trees are flowering sooner

10 Future Predictions of Global Climate
Though the magnitudes of human impacts are greater than they have ever been, so too are human abilities to model, predict, and manage current and future impacts.

11 Ocean Acidity Future Amount of CO2 dissolved in ocean has increased
So has ocean acidity More CO2 in atmosphere Oceans will continue to become more acidic More acidity makes it harder for corals to build skeletons For shellfish to build the shells they need for protection Corals are important because they provide home to other sea creatures Less corals, less fish

12 Earth’s Temperature Has been rising during 30 years
2001 and 2010 warmest decade Higher temps. higher heat waves High temperatures for days and nights More greenhouse gases into atmosphere, temperature would increase by 4 to 12°F by 2100 Big changes like renewable resources instead of fossil fuels, increase would be about 2 to 5°F Higher temperatures = more and longer heat waves, oceans, weather patterns, snow and ice, and plants and animals
