1 We all Win with Sensible Building Material Choices
Presented by: Cate O’dahl Robert Burns

2 The Shades of Green Different material choices have different environmental impacts Even in the same product category some brands or models have greater environmental benefits Instructions / Language: Time for this Activity depends on the size of the class, so be prepared to monitor the time accordingly Ask each participant to introduce themselves, including their name, what they want to get from the class or series and any experience they have with selling or listing green properties. For the final question “What do you know about green building?” Explain the Shades of Green So, when you give your introduction, please rate your exposure to green building on the paint swatch spectrum Background / Reference Materials: Resources for Instructor and/or Participants:

3 Why go green? Materials Efficiency Benefit
Americans continue to generate more waste each year, growing from 247 million tons in 1990 to 409 million tons in 2001 On the average, every American generates 4.5 pounds of waste per day Benefit Recycling just 1 ton of aluminum cans conserves more than 207 million BTUs, the equivalent of 36 barrels of oil, or 1,665 gallons of gasoline. Instructions / Language:

4 Trade-Offs

5 Material Efficiency Criteria
Made with salvaged, recycled, or agricultural waste content Conserve natural resources Avoid toxic or other emissions Save energy or water Contribute to a safe, healthy indoor environment Source: GreenSpec® Guide to Residential Building Materials, Alex Wilson & Mark Piekorn

6 Salvaged, Recycled, or Agricultural Waste

7 Conserve Natural Resources
Reduce Material Use, Conserve Other Resources Rapidly Renewable Materials Certified Sustainable Materials

8 Avoid Toxic or Other Emissions
Natural or minimally processed Alternatives to ozone-depleting substances Alternatives to hazardous materials Products that reduce or eliminate pesticides Products that reduce stormwater pollution Reduce impacts from con/deconstruction activities Reduce pollution or waste from jobsite operations

9 Save Energy or Water

10 Contribute to Safe, Healthy Indoor Environment
Particleboard that has no added urea-formaldehyde Duct Mastic can block the entry of mold-laden air or insulation fibers into a duct system True linoleum naturally controls microbial contamination

11 Materials Efficiency Benefits
What do you think would be the benefits of material efficiency? Protect the environment Add Market Value Client benefits Lower maintenance Lower replacement costs Community involvement {{Salvaged brick creates urban loft ambience – Envision Homes}} Take notes on easel pad {{Align with new updates}} Explain: Materials and product choices have an impact on the entire built environment and the Building Industry. Material choice “trade-offs” include considering full costs associated with embodied energy, sustainable manufacturing, and first cost considerations of building materials, including insulation, countertops, and flooring. Remind them of one of the most widely quoted definition of sustainability and sustainable development, that of the Brundtland Commission of the United Nations on March 20, 1987: “sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” Explain that the instructor will use Product samples to demonstrate representative benefits Instructions / Language: Background / Reference Materials: Resources for Instructor and/or Participants:

12 Jobsite Operations Reduce Reuse Recycle Central cutting area
Involve subcontractors Reuse Deconstruction Salvage Recycle Instructions / Language: Central cutting areas to reuse wood on site Collect and give away of sell reusable items – salvaged from the deconstruction wood scraps lumber windows doors – architectural elements fixtures What else?

13 Material Selection Regionally produced Sustainable harvested
Resource efficient Recycled content Rapidly renewable Salvaged Less toxic Recyclable {{replace image after purchase from istock Instructions / Language:

14 Key Take Aways Materials recycling saves energy and turns a waste into a resource A wide variety of of green building materials are widely available that Use waste products Conserve natural resources Avoid toxic emissions Save energy and water Contribute to a safe and healthy indoor environment Quality materials equals market value, durability, less maintenance, fewer replacements Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

15 Resources Building Green , www.buildinggreen.com
Ecohaus King County Green Tools, Construction & Demolition Recycling Washington State Department of Ecology, On-line Recycling Tools Instructions / Language: Throughout the series I will be bringing in new resources that will help guide you through your green building education.
