2. Use brackets to get the general idea of major paragraphs and sections
When the text is too long, bracketing will help you determine which parts are important enough to re-read.
Write notes in the margins.
As you highlight or bracket section, be sure paraphrase and summarize what you have highlighted or bracketed. When looking back at the text, one should be able to tell the significance of the text without having to re-read the entire chapter or section.
4. Unfamiliar words
When we are reading texts, we often come across words that we are unfamiliar with. Although we have context clues to aid us in determining the meaning of the word, we may face difficulties decoding meaning. When we encounter words that we are unfamiliar with, we must annotate them so that we can conduct research, later.
Summarize the end of each chapter or section by writing a short summary about all that you have read. In your summary, sum up important events, ideas and concepts.
